#1 - William McKinley delivered this speech* to a contingent of
Civil War veterans who visited him at his Canton home as part of
McKinley’s "front-porch" campaign during the 1896 presidential race.
Please note: We transcribed the text that follows as closely as
possible from a reporter’s typed transcript. The "cheers and applause"
notations, which were written in pencil, are approximate. #2 - The following report* was issued five days after the Battle of Cedar Creek (which took place on October 19, 1864). This account of the battle bears the names of two Ohio officers (and future U.S. presidents) – Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley. Please note: We transcribed the text as closely as possible from the typewritten report. #3 - What follows is a newspaper transcript of a speech* William McKinley gave to survivors of his old Civil War regiment, the Twenty-third Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The veterans visited McKinley’s home in Canton during his "front-porch" presidential campaign of 1896. Please note: We transcribed the text that follows as closely as possible from the newspaper article; we are unsure of the date the article appeared, but the newspaper was most likely the Canton Repository
